Another day, another silly editorial about what Apple isn't doing/should be doing/is totally missing an opportunity for, vis-a-vis Boot Camp. This time, it's CNet's Asher Moses (whose smiling tanned physique is pictured here) chiming in with his two cents, in the cleverly titled "Bunk Camp: Apple gets it wrong." But Moses only succeeds in once again raising the question: why do people so often write as if they live in some sort of existential vacuum?
If Moses had taken a chance to look around, he probably would have found John Gruber's excellent analysis from yesterday (posted on MacUser by Derik), refuting exactly the point his column is trying to make. From the CNet article:
If Apple wants a significant number of users to sample OS X, Boot Camp just won't cut it. Instead, it's going to have to get off the fence and start selling OS X to PC users, rather than restricting it to the Mac. I don't see any valid reason why Apple isn't doing this, as it would dramatically increase its revenue and market penetration. Is Apple not confident that it can compete with PC vendors based on hardware design alone, should users have the ability to run OS X on a standard Dell or HP machine? It has nothing to do with confidence. It simply doesn't make good business sense. Why bother competing in marketshare if, in the end, it will probably only lose Apple money?
If this was an obscure issue, fine, it might be understandable that one editorial might slip through the gaps. But Boot Camp has been covered to death, so I hardly see an excuse for advancing theories that have already been logically decimated.

Why, oh, why does every every tech writer on the internet feel they need to chime in SOMETHING regarding this whole bootcamp thing? What I hate most about it is that some of them haven't even tried it or even own a mac!
Listen, it's just an added value. The mac is still a mac. If it makes you feel any better, think of it using this metaphor. Say your mac is a car, and bootcamp is like getting a sun roof. You could live without it, but it's a nice option. Just be aware that rain, bugs and everything else can get through your sun roof and possibly mess up your nice new car.
