Boot Camp sells hardware

XP on Mac John Gruber is at it again. This time, he’s taking down the silly misconceptions about what Apple is trying to accomplish with Boot Camp. It all comes down to hardware. Apple has always been a hardware developer first, strategically developing software to support those goals.

Being a hardware seller primarily doesn’t mean Apple wants to saturate the marketplace either. Selling commodity hardware isn’t where the money is. Software isn’t exactly a winning proposition either. Both rely on huge numbers and razor thin margins that don’t exactly allow for innovation.

In typical Daring Fireball style, he breaks it down much better and in more detail than I can summarize, so take the time and read up on why Boot Camp isn’t going to change Apple’s business model.
