Among the myriad other improvements Boot Camp 1.1 has to offer (iSight drivers!), there seems to be one other that’s Apple’s quietly slipped in: the ability to save drivers not just to a CD-R but to a folder anywhere on your computer. This is a great idea, since the driver file is certainly not big enough to require a CD; you can pop it instead on a flash drive, or transfer it over the network (assuming, of course, that the network drivers are already installed on the Windows side). I’ll be installing these drivers later today; I’m looking forward to trying out the iSight in Windows Skype, and seeing how the internal mic functions.
Beyond that, though, is the future of Boot Camp releases going to be mainly driver updates? We still have yet to hear how the “final” version released with Leopard is going to behave, and the WWDC was certainly short on details. Could Apple be keeping something in reserve (virtualization?) or is what you see what you get? At the moment, I’m tending towards the latter; if there’d been something big to say about virtualization, why hide it? Are we really that worried that Microsoft is going to introduce OS X virtualization in Windows? Or, here’s an idea, Microsoft releases their own Boot Camp-like solution allowing you to install OS X on any PC. Now that would be clever.
