Safari 3.0 final and Leopard

Safari A question popped into my head recently as I thought about the impending arrival of Leopard. One of its key features is Safari 3.0. That’s not *beta* Safari 3.0. It’s the real thing. That leaves a huge number of Safari 3.0 beta users on both Tiger and Windows. Apple has said nothing about its plans.

At some point, a full Safari for Windows is going to be released. They didn’t develop the beta just for kicks. Friday is a clear winner of a timeframe for it to happen.

On Tiger, the future is less clear. Apple set precedent by leaving Safari for Jaguar where it was. They reinforced it with the inclusion of Safari 2.0 in Tiger without an upgrade path for Panther. I hate to be a pessimist, but it’s rather surprising that Apple would do an about face with this policy and continue updating the browser for Tiger.

Not only is it a change in behavior, but it’s one less reason for Apple fans to upgrade to Leopard. That said, it would be a very user friendly move. Anybody want to channel an Apple rumor site and claim that sources have told you the specific release date for Tiger and Windows?

I hope they release Safari 3.0 for Tiger. It would be goofy to have a newer version of Safari on Windows than on the last version of the Mac OS.

Not only that Fletcher, but its just plain wrong. This is not 1994 where you had to buy a browser to use on your OS.

Apple, do the right thing for your customers and support under Tiger too. Its just a web browser.

Since Tiger had the Beta for 3.0, it wouldn't make sense not to release the final 3.0 for Tiger too. If they didn't, then they either leave it in beta, or somehow downgrade it back to 2. I don't think Apple is stupid enough to do either.

When Apple released tiger with safari 2.0, they release safari 1.3 for panther to give it the same underlying Webkit.

I believe Apple will release Safari 3.0 for Tiger officially.

Apple is releasing Safari 3 Final for Tiger. It is going to be part of the OS X 10.4.11 update, which is slated to be released tonight, Wed Oct 24.

What about Boot Camp? There is a Boot Camp beta for Tiger, but when Boot Camp for Leopard is officially released, thus ends the support on Tiger.

It's a fair point about Windows, though... why would they maintain Safari 3.x for Windows, but only 2.x on Tiger? I guess we'll see what happens.

Let's see. Didn't Apple drop support for the beta of Bootcamp? Why wouldn't they drop support for Safari 3 in Tiger?

Now, having said that, I don't think that is what they will do. Nor do I think that Tiger users will get the full blown Safari 3 if Apple continues to support it.

One word; Webclip. Making widgets out of webpages will be Leopard only, so I think there will be two different versions of Safari 3 on the Mac, one for Leopard and one for Tiger.

Well, I certainly hope they release a final version for Tiger, if they are releasing a final version for Windows... that really wouldn't seem fair that those who didn't even buy a Mac have more than those who did.

Yes, they will:

"The final version of Safari 3 will be available as a feature in the upcoming Mac OS® X version 10.5 Leopard, and will be available as a free download to Mac OS X Tiger and Windows users in October."
