Watching Netflix instantly on your Mac, NOW

Posted by Derik DeLong | Monday, November 03, 2008 6:01 AM PT

Netflix That day has finally come to combine your love of Netflix and your love of Macs. That’s right, you can start watching movies instantly on your (Intel based) Mac. Not by the end of the year, not soon, today. Oh, I’ll be watching a lot of movies tonight.

First thing, make sure you get the 2.0 version of Microsoft’s Silverlight plugin. I know it’s highly disappointing to need a Microsoft product, but go do it.

Second, visit this link to opt-in. That’s it. That’s all you need to do.

Now visit the pages for all those movies in your queue that can be watched instantly and click play. I played a couple seconds of Pale Rider and it seemed to work well. It’s been a long road, but we’ve finally arrived.

Anybody having problems installing the software? I download it, the installer opens up as it would with any other program, then - surprise, surprise - the disk image ejects itself and the software is no longer available to install. Tried it three times, same thing each time, whether a browser is running or not. Somehow this doesn't shock me, seeing as it's an MS product.

I opened the package and just dropped the Silverlight.plugin into ~/Library/Internet-Plugins and it works just fine. The quality of the picture is rather... lacking, but I can deal with it since I don't count on it... for now.
