Now, make your own 640x480 iPod videos

iSquintWhen Apple released the new 5.5G iPod video and accompanying iTunes Store with feature films, the resolution of the movies downloaded and played on the iPod was increased from 320 x 240 to 640 x 480. This doubled resolution may not make a discernible difference on the iPod’s screen, but it most certainly will when watching your movies on your Mac or a TV. So, the movies you buy for $10 - $15 from the store will have the doubled resolution, but what about the movies you already own on DVD.

Most people use Handbrake (or Instant Handbrake) to convert their movies to iPod format. But this application does not allow you to easily convert movies into the newly supported 640 x 480 resolution. iSquint covered by Macworld this morning will, however. The application supports conversion to the 640 x 840 H.264 iPod format. It does not, unfortunately, support ripping from directly from DVDs—you will need another utility (such as Handbrake or MacTheRipper) to do this. Happy ripping!

Handbrake will probably update soon, don't you think?

Have you used VisualHub?

iSquint is also great converting these .flv files from YouTube - assuming you don't want to use something such as TubeSock.
