So, while most of us will be content with Elgato’s stick for dedicated hardware encoding, professionals will now have their equivalent product with the new IO-HD.
The IO-HD is a box developed AJA that plugs into your Mac and can encode HD video (and even up-convert SD to HD) in realtime via Apple’s new ProRes 422 format, which is built into the hardware. ProRes 422 is a post-production format that supports 10-bit, 4:2:2, full raster, VBR HD video encoding. Plus, ProRes 422 stores HD video in SD file sizes (1TB of HD video becomes 170GB, while still preserving full quality).
Not much has been posted about the IO-HD, well, anywhere, but from some pictures and a video, it seems like the device supports a variety of input and output ports, including HDMI, Firewire, and XLR. The IO-HD is also portable, so it can be used on-location with a MacBook Pro and Final Cut Pro 6.
The IO-HD will be available for a not-so-cool $3,495 in July, so if you’re a video professional, get your wallet ready for some major weight-loss.
