Let these Huckleberry questions hound you no longer

HuckleberryYou may remember that we discussed the Huckleberry mirror the other week—a device that you clip on top of your MacBook or MacBook Pro to turn the iSight into a front-facing camera. I advanced a couple of questions about the left-right orientation of the camera and—much more pressingly—where the name “Huckleberry” came from. Inventor Charlie Dancey has responded on both counts, and added some titillating hints to boot:

Regarding the flippiness of the image: some say that Huckleberry turns the picture upside down but they obviously never use the rear-view mirror in their cars.

It mirrors the image left-right as you would expect and we recommend iGlasses to fix that. We’ve been talking to the iGlasses people so you can expect some news on that front soon.

Regarding the name: well for one we figured you wouldn’t forget it and for two: you remember the story about getting the fence painted? Well for “fence” think “marketing” - we have some viral plans.

All I can say is watch out for the Golden Huckleberry Awards.

Now, at the risk of offending the charming Mr. Dancey, I feel obliged to point out that it was Huckleberry Finn’s compatriot Tom Sawyer who engaged in a bit of fence whitewashing. But this talk of Golden Huckleberry Awards has us intrigued (and thinking, perhaps unduly, of Willy Wonka’s golden tickets). Either way, we’d be happy to test the Huckleberry out, should an opportunity come along.

Huckleberry?

Refer to Val Kilmer's line as Doc Holliday.

Oops, there's my literary credentials trashed. No matter, one can spend simply ages naming a product and I managed it in one blinding flash and got that job ticked off my list.

As the the Golden Huckleberry Awards, well I can now sensationally reveal that we have signed up Robert Llewellyn, TV Presenter and robotic star of cult sci-fi TV series Red Dwarf to be the "face" of the Huckleberry and he'll be picking the best of YouTube on a weekly basis and awarding the producers a Golden Huckleberry.

It's kind of like the Oscars for the Web, only done on a shoestring and no big parties. Should be fun though because Robert is totally obsessed with this sort of thing.

More to follow.

I'll send MacUser a sample of the prodct if you drop me a mailing address.
