As a photographer and occasional videographer, I keep an eye on new digital cameras and camcorders, more specifically on low-end High Definition video cameras that are constantly coming down in price, enough to be affordable for the average consumer. That’s why I was intrigued by Canon’s HV10, an HD camcorder sold for as low as $750 at some stores.
However, it turns out the HV10 isn’t so great after all, mostly because of poor design decisions and omissions such as the lack of microphone jack. The good news, though, is that Canon has now come out with the camcorder’s successor, the HV20. David Pogue chooses this model as his pick for Best Camcorder, describing how it fixes the HV10’s shortcomings (the bad microphone placement and the missing microphone port, among other things).
It’s good to be reminded that you’ll need a powerful Mac and a HDTV to thoroughly enjoy this type of camera, but it’s exciting to see those image quality beasts moving into the consumer world. After all, as Pogue puts it, “the image quality is absolutely, forehead-slwappingly spectacular”.
