How to watch the World Cup on your Mac, 3rd Edition

Posted by Cyrus Farivar | Friday, June 30, 2006 9:51 AM PT

I don’t know if this was available all along, but a reader wrote in with instructions as to how to watch the games via ESPN360 — FOR FREE!

Here’s how:

1) Download Flip4Mac
2) Open up QT, pull down the File menu, and select “Open URL”
3) Enter this address: mms://live.espnevent.espn.com.edgestreams.net/reflector:51921
4) Press play.
5) GOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!

[A million hat tips: woo]

Update: This feed works fine, without the need of a proxy, reports a friend in France.

When I use this URL and plug it into Quicktime, I get the ESPN 360 logo with the following message:

"Thank you for watching the 2006 FIFA World Cup on ESPN360.

Please select another event from the program guide."

Yeah. I'm getting the same error. I watched the Germany game like this with no problem.

Magic... did you get my email? I explained a bit better in that. I searched the DOM on the espn360.com page, found the playlist, got the url from the playlist and voila! Unfortunately, for some reason I couldn't get the new playlist from the DOM on their webpage, so I guessed it, and I guessed right, downloaded the playlist, and got the updated port number from that.

Might be worth pointing out that Flip4Mac is not yet available for Intel Macs. The site indicates that a universal binary version is in late beta.

The beta version works fine on intel macs...it's no longer available for download but you can get it from binaries
