The much-loved VLC Media Player has received a long anticipated update to 0.9.2. If you don’t already use it, now is the time to scoop up the free, cross-platform, open source media player.
“What’s so great about the VLC Player?”, the uninitiated might ask. Well, aside from being free, open source, and lightweight, the VLC Media Player pretty much plays anything. There are so many codecs crammed into this app that you’d be hard pressed to find a non-corrupted media file that it won’t play. It’s also got a generous amount of features, including subtitle support.
The latest update maintains VLC’s lightweight feel and ease-of-use, but adds a new interface module for Linux, Unix and Windows, as well as a bunch of extra filters and codecs, bug fixes, and other improvements.
Here’s a full list of OS-dependent features that VLC offers. Download it here, and experience the magic!
I have downloaded the latest version of VLC "9" for the Mac platform and find that it will not play full screen video unless it is in "Front Row" and that the control buttons on the player do not work or on the menus, so I am unable to stop it mid stream or step-back or step-forward. I had to turn off the fullscreen mode in preferences because in the player menu under video everything is grayed out apart from fullscreen. When I then tried playing a DVD the video didn't appear in the player and all I got was the sound for the opening menu. Also while in 'Front Row" the buttons didn't work when I tried to stop it from playing and when I push the "Esc" key I couldn't exit the video. Only through perseverance was I able to exit it using Apples "Exposé - F9" which allowed me to see all windows. I thought that I would turned on the fullscreen mode in preferences again to try and play a couple of different DVDs just in-case the DVD I was using was the problem. But in both cases all I got was the screen going white and no image appearing at all but I could here the sound.
Could it be that VLC9 needs to be tweaked a little more to iron out these problems?
I have been using VLC on both the PC and Apple platforms for many years now and like it as an alternative to windows media player and quicktime, so I am very disappointed with the version so far and will go back to the last version until these problems have been iron out.
I am using a G5 with OS 10.5.5.
does it play flash video files? i downloaded a few and it didn't play i thought maybe i should get a newer version of it...
i hate having to use more than one application..
I downloaded it last night and all the features and full screen mode worked fine. My apple remote is able to control it as well. No problems here. Next time, use a screenshot of the Mac version, not Windows.
Why on earth dis you posted a WINDOWS image of VLC?
