Updates, updates, updates…

It’s too much. I can’t take it anymore. Why all those software updates all of a sudden? MarsEdit 1.1.4, Spanning Sync 1.0, Mac OS X 10.4.9… Well, I’m afraid we’re not quite done yet. Yes, brace yourself, because I’m going to tell you about two, count ‘em two, additional updates.

First, Apple patches security flaws in the dinosaurian OS X 10.3 (yes, dinosaurian is an actual English word). The two or three guys still using Panther can go grab Security Update 2007-003 on Apple’s website. If you’re still using 10.3 and were offended by my characterization of the OS as “dinosaurian”, please express your anger in the comments below.

Second, Cupertino brings you version 6.0.6 of iPhoto. Again, this update is available via Software Update or on the web. You’ll be pleased to know that among other things, problems with photocasting have been fixed. “But I don’t photocast my photos!”, I hear you say. Well, me neither. Maybe it isn’t such a revolutionary invention after all.

I'm one of those few still using panther. I planned on upgrading to tiger a few months after it released but never got around to it. It still works great so i have no issues with it. I'll definitely upgrade when 10.5 comes out though.

For those of us that still use older hardware for some uses (upgraded Blue G3 as a dedicated torrent box — or like my father-in-law who I just got a "new" 733 MHz G4 for Christmas), 10.3.9 is perfectly fine. In my experience, Tiger is S.L.O.W. on these older machines, and offers very little enhanced functionality for the cost in performance.

one of you, macuser bloggers, still use panther. on his powermac B&W.

my iMac G4 was much faster with panther than it is with tiger :(

is it me or they say u can connect cameras for video conferencing via iChat? do they mean generic non-apple cameras?

It's true that for older machines, Panther is not as demanding as Tiger, so I definitely understand why people are holding off.

jayH, they say that in the OS X 10.4.9 update. That grabbed my eye as well; I'm not sure what they mean, but it looks like that could be the case, which I know would be great news for some people. There has definitely been a lack in iChat's functionality there. If anybody has a USB webcam that works with iChat after the update, we'd love to hear from you.

dinosaurian beats Intel nativity.

Tiger has some nice features but I really miss Panther's search functionality. What?! I hear you cry, when Tiger gives you Spotlight. Well, Spotlight is great when you want to find something based on its contents or metadata but it's sloth slow compared to Panther's search in Finder when you just need to find a file based on its name. Sometimes that is damned useful and for that I do miss Panther at times.

well, based on the fact they have discontinued the external iSight, it would make sense if they did allow people to buy non apple cameras, since as of now they don't offer them with the apple displays...

my cousin was asking me how she could video conference with iChat just ysterday, if her mac mini didn't come with a camera lol

Hey.. I have a 1st Generation Mac Mini with Panther. Well, it came loaded with Panther. Then I upgraded to Tiger. It had been acting sluggish and decided to go back to the original OS (Panther). Now, it works better. Personally, I don't care for widgets or some of the other enhancements. I do miss spotlight though. Say what you want to... Spotlight rocks.

Somehow I still feel that Panther is better than Vista.

Yes many regular cameras work within iChat. Ive been using my camera for years, just plus in the USB and open iChat and BAM you got yourself a webcam. And yes mine still works after the update.

jayH said:

you are talk about a non apple camera, right telp? because of course the iSight works with iChat. but back in the day if looked system requirements, you'd see that iChat required iSight for video conferencing...
