Clutch and TransmissionAt the top of my (and David’s) list of favorite Mac applications resides Transmission, resplendent in all its torrent downloading, red geared glory. Therefore, when I received the news of Transmission and Clutch making their relationship official, I could hardly contain my excitement long enough to pen down this post. Granted, they’ve only been on a few dates yet (i.e. are currently in beta) but if the stability of their current relationship is any indication, we should be hearing wedding bells any moment now.

Version 1.30 of the torrent client, released yesterday, bundled in Clutch, a web interface that allows you to control Transmission remotely from anywhere in the world using just a web browser. All you need to do is enable it under the shiny new Remote tab in the Preferences screen and then close the window. Once the application automatically quits and relaunches, you can launch the web interface from the same Preferences screen (or by clicking here). Of course, you’ll need to have the IP address of your Mac handy when you need to access it from another computer.

There are other nifty little additions here and there such as Quick Look integration (which isn’t very useful unless you have the Folder View and BetterZIP plugins installed), ability to add or remove tracker addresses and drag transfers to different groups. You can check out the entire list of changes here. Of course, all of the above is free and the latest version (v1.31, which “fixes a crash caused by certain torrent files”) can be downloaded via the update mechanism built into the application or from the Transmission website.

That Clutch integration just shows how awesome and easy to use Mac softwares can be. I remember how I used to struggle to configure that uTorrent web interface. Never really worked properly. I hope transmission's web interface works well enough to be useful.
