Update: Oh, Monday mornings. As the observant among you have probably noticed, Derik already thoroughly covered the Acorn 1.2 update below. Whoopsie. Sorry for the dupe.
Maybe it’s because today is the 12th, I don’t know, but for some reason, we’ve got a pair of 1.2 updates for two of OS X’s best indie image editing programs, Acorn and Pixelmator. Both applications have been maturing for a while, and the 1.2 updates continue that trend with bug fixes, feature updates, and general 1.2ness of the best kind.
Flying Meat’s Acorn adds a new “Last Filter” menu item, “New Layer With Selection/New Layer With Selection via Cut” commands, a fancy (dare we say schmancy) crop mode, an overlay blend mode, JPEG 2000 support, and enough more that I can’t list it all here. In terms of bug fixes and tweaks, there’s over a dozen changes. For the full skinny, check the change list over at Flying Meat.
Meanwhile, the Pixelmator Team has been keeping busy as well. Their own 1.2 update, which Infinite Loop got a peek at adds plenty of newness, including a Color Balance and Curves adjustment, Rulers and Guides (with requisite UI flashiness), a polygonal lasso (for roping those pesky polygonal steer), and a new Auto Enhance function.
Excellent updates to two solid applications. It looks like the indie image editor throwdown will continue apace. Personally, I use both, depending on what I’m trying to do. Do you have a clear preference? Or is this like settling a Spider-Man vs. Batman fight?
I have Pixelmator, but have not tried Acorn. To date, I am quite satisfied with Pixelmator-- I guess I do not have any reason to leave it for a competing application. However, would you be willing to give an explanation as to which you prefer for which purposes? ...curiosity generally gets the best of me. ;)
