You’d think we were past the point at which software becoming universal binaries were news, but when you’re talking about the premier screenshot and screen recording utility finally takes the plunge, you just have to talk about it. The excellent Snapz Pro X is made by the legendary Ambrosia software.
Sure, it’s a bit pricey ($69 for movie taking), but if you’re serious about this stuff, Snapz Pro X has become the standard. I know that in the period between the introductions of Intel Macs and this release some competitors have cropped up. You’re all savvy, are any of the competitors better?

Many, many people prefer iShowU, because you don't have to wait for it to render the video and the quality is as good. And it's only $20.

iShowU is good at some things, and it's great that Snapz Pro finally has some real competition, but I would disagree that iShowU's quality is necessarily just as good. The problem with iShowU is that because it does all its processing on-the-fly, its video quality can suffer when you try to do compressed video. For example, a full-screen H.264 capture results in horrible frame rates with iShowU, whereas Snapz Pro, which compresses the video at the end, gives you a consistent, high frame rate.
