Skype 2.0 has that lovely golden hue

Skype VideoAbout time, Skype. We’ve had to while away our hours on previews and betas while those Windows folks got their hands on the fresh goodness of Skype 2.0. Finally, our time is here as Skype 2.0 has gone gold.

The biggest addition to Skype 2.0 is, of course, video chatting. Unfortunately, unlike iChat, Skype only supports one-to-one video chats. Video conferences are “not possible at the moment.” Skype also claims that they’ve improved video quality and made their client more compatible with older computers; its requirements now list only an 800MHz G4, 512MB of RAM and Mac OS 10.3.9.

Is there anything else new in 2.0 (it’s actually 2.0.0.6, if you want to get technical)? Not really, from my quick look. Video quality still looks a little blocky versus iChat, but if you’re want to make calls to landlines or do video chats across platforms, Skype remains the software to beat.
