One of the biggest crowds I’ve run into at SIGGRAPH so far has been around the Autodesk booth. The company makes the popular 3D modeling, animation, and rendering program, Maya, which has just released a new version, 8. But not unlike Derik’s Quicken woes, Maya 8 is not Universal.
Surprised, I traipsed over to the Autodesk booth to talk to the lone fellow at a Mac workstation. He confirmed that Maya would not be universal this version and, when asked why, he hemmed and hawed and suggested that it was just “too soon.” I tested the waters by asking if it was because most of their customers use professional level products like Power Macs and he sort of shrugged and nodded, then reiterated his “too soon” comment. He then opined that we might see Universal in the next forthcoming version.
The “too soon” argument holds water, I guess. But it’s been a year since the Intel Mac announcement, and presumably by next week, the entire Mac line will be going Intel. By the end of the year, one wonders if these laggards to the Intel platform will still be playing catch up.
