Missing Dock Icons Thomas was nice enough to tell us about the Mac Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.1 yesterday. I love those software updates, so I was ready to dig in and really adjust some fan behavior. Know what I mean? Ok, enough with the jokes.

I applied the update and watched as the computer restart to finish. Upon starting up, the Mac Pro’s fans kicked into high gear. Not just medium gear, they ran full force. Next, I felt a cool breeze as it pulled the air by me and finally saw a cloud of dust. I can’t tell you if it come from within the Mac Pro or from behind my desk, but wow, those are some powerful fans.

Once it finished and the dock appeared, things seemed out of place. Half my dock icons were question marks or document icons. Suddenly they didn’t work. The Finder froze. OmniWeb complained about a POSIX error relating to the inability to access a network buffer. That’s when I remember that I used Cocktail (that I got through the MacUpdate bundle) to apply a special network profile. I managed to open the Terminal, nuked the StartupItem that it creates to accomplish this, and restarted. Suddenly all was well.

In summary, Mac Pro SMC Firmware Update good; tweaking your network settings with Cocktail bad. Don’t get me wrong, I like Cocktail, but this one feature seems to have a flaw.

Everything went OK in my case. Well, the first time the update didn't install, but after the second try the fans went bazook, doing exactly as described in the post. Luckily I have dusted my place yesterday so it wasn't a lot of dust in the air.

Nothing changed in the dock, though. The restart followed as instructed, then clicking OK and it was done.

According to my iStat PRO widget everything works OK and the fans are doing around 500 - 600 rpm.

Nice report!
