Microsoft’s very Intel-native Office 2008 is going to see its first new update next month. Naturally, it’s going to be version 12.0.1.
As with any software release, our commitment is to continuous improvement, and we are currently finishing up the first Office 2008 update, 12.0.1, which contains fixes for high-priority issues we’ve identified. We’re targeting a March 11th, 2008 release date, which will automatically be available via Microsoft Auto Update, and as a download from Mactopia at: http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.mspx.
I’m so relieved. I was really afraid that first update would include only low-priority issues that were chosen by random (I heard a dart board was going to be involved). It’s a little hard to get excited by a minor update (forgetting the fact that I’ve moved on to iWork). I’m more interested in the other part of this announcement.
In order to get this 2008 update out as soon as possible, they’ve put off work on Office 2004’s Open XML File Format Converter Update. The precedent and trend has been set. Office 2004 users, be ready to be treated like the cheapskate, second-rate customers that Microsoft apparently thinks you are. There was a commitment made to have this update out 6-8 weeks after Office 2008 was released. It’s been pushed back to June. Let’s just hope this is the only delay.
The post also outlines other software releases like RDC for Mac 2.0 in the spring and Messenger for Mac 7.0 later this year.
