MW08: iPhone and iPod touch get IMAP support for Gmail

iPhone - Mail - Add AccountIncluded with all the amazing things that Jobs announces at his keynotes are always several little feature updates that don’t make it to the announcement and sometimes aren’t even advertised anywhere else by Apple. Falling in this category is a neat little update to the Mail application on the iPhone that is available to all iPhone users for free via the v1.1.3 firmware update.

As you might know if you use the service, Google recently added IMAP support to Gmail, their widely used and free email service. Till today, the iPhone used the POP3 option when you chose to use to pre-configured Gmail settings on the device and the only way to use IMAP was to do so manually. Starting with v1.1.3, however, the iPhone will use IMAP to access your Gmail account when you use the default settings.

IMAP is, of course, better than POP3 because it keeps all your email and the status of each one in sync across all the devices you access it from. So email that you’ve read on your iPhone will automatically be marked as read in your desktop email client and deleted emails will be moved to the trash in all the clients you access Gmail from, as well as the web interface.

Everyone seems to have missed this handy feature update to the iPhone but thanks to the Official Gmail Blog, we now know. Needless to say, the Mail application included in the paid software update for iPod touch also ships with this feature. Enjoy the newly refined Gmail experience on your iPhone and/or iPod touch.

Don't forget to configure the IMAP folder actions to match those of webmail.
