We’ve seen firmware updates for a number of Macs, including the 15” and 17” MacBook Pros, but Apple has today released an update for the MacBook line, which hopefully will correct the intermittent “mooing” fan issues experienced by so many users.
The problem doesn’t seem to apply to all MacBooks—for example, while my white MacBook has been afflicted since I received it, the black MacBook I was using for the past few weeks didn’t exhibit the same symptoms, leading me to wonder if something in the manufacturing process was changed. However, I lack the serial number of that unit, so am unable to determine when it was assembled, which might provide some data for that issue.
Any MacBook users applied the patch yet? Is the mooing gone? Is it louder? Is there suddenly a live cow standing next to you? Let us know.

I've applied it and the mooing has stopped .... for now. It does seem like the fan runs more often though.
It killed the moo on my macbook by keeping the fan on almost 100 percent of the time. But the fans are near silent, so I'm a happy camper.
I never had the mooing problem with my Macbook, which was purchased in the first week of July. I installed hte firmware update anyways and noticed that the fan sounded smoother. I don't know if this is a coincidence because I've only ever tried to listen to it a small handful of times.
One thing I did notice different was that for the first time, i could hear the fan without having to hold my ear up near the MacBook. This happened about 10min ago as I was converting some AAC files to MP3. Also, when the converting process finished, the fan gradually slowed down to its usual rpm. On my old Dell, the spooling up and down process was very On/Off or Black & White in comparison.
In THIS discussions on the apple forums, a user opened up two macbooks, one with a moo and one without, and discovered that the macbook without the moo had a fan made by Sunon, and the other macbook had another brand. Also, the person said that when they switched the fans, the mooing macbook became silent, and the silent macbook mooed.
The moo is gone and it seems the MacBook is cooler as well...
My Macbook never had a "mooing" problem, but it does feel cooler to me now. The fans run more often, but they're very quiet.
