Now is the time loyal readers that I call upon you to rise up against Apple. They’ve gone too far and released an update with terribly terse release notes one time too many. They’ve updated iChat with iChat Update 1.0.
This update renews the .Mac certificate required by iChat for encrypting text, audio, and video conferences.
This document will be updated as more information becomes available.
Aaarrgh! Updating the certificate (presumably to put the expiration date further into the future) doesn’t need too much explanation, but really, Apple should be able to hit it out of the park with such a simple update. Maybe they’ll fill it in soon but this lack of documentation act is getting old.
At any rate, that certificate is used in order to initiate secure communications (I saw a flash as I opened iChat for the first time after but I can’t tell you exactly what it said).
MacUser is your source for news, info, and opinion about Apple, the Mac, and the iPod. Our dedicated team of bloggers covers everything that is relevant to Mac users — and, okay, some stuff that’s not quite relevant, but is still a lot of fun.
I can't see how updating the certificate would take 3.9 MB. So just for fun, I'm going to suggest the obvious. A tease for iChat Moble. :) The document will be updated Jan 9.
Something that should be pointed out is that this tersely worded update requires a system restart.
Huh?
There is no warning that this will happen, and Software Update gives you two options: Restart or Shut Down. No "Cancel," no "Well, maybe I don't want this update, then," and not even a "Perhaps restart later." On my computer, iChat wasn't even running when it updated, so why the restart? No reason given.
It's interesting to note that even Microsoft's abhorable Windows O/S allows you to "Restart Later" or even "Cancel" the restart to allow you to restart when it's convenient for you, rather than at Microsoft's whim.
Get on the stick, Apple! You're much better than this.
To my memory, it said something like: "Please wait while the iChat certificate is being updated."
i update my ichat and now it doesn't work. i didn't have time to really check it out because i was install win Xp on my macbook pro at the time.just wondering if anyone else had a problem with there ichat video conference after the update.
In Apple's defense, I actually like that it doesn't give me a "Restart Later" option. Instead, it leaves full system functionality while never letting you forget that you still haven't restarted by keeping that option box open. In Windows, you can't do anything in the system until you choose an option, or if you click, "Restart Later" you're liable to forget, and I know I don't restart my Mac... ever. Unless something goes wrong.
