HandBrake, the famed cross-platform utility that allows you to rip your DVDs and store them on your computer, was updated to v0.9.2 yesterday. Among the lengthy list of changes is support for Dolby Digital 5.1 multi-track audio and compatibility with the latest firmwares of the Apple TV, iPhone and iPod touch. There’s also the usual round of bug fixes, stability improvements, and plenty of geeky additional features for the “power user.”
This release, however, only works with Leopard, which is in accordance with the recent trend among Mac developers of focusing on the latest Mac OS X iteration, and certainly sad for those still stuck on previous versions.
I don’t own even a single movie DVD—nor do I intend to in the future—so HandBrake’s not a big draw for me, but if you boast a DVD collection the size of Mount Olympus, you might want to give it a try. It is freeware, available for Mac, Windows and Linux, and can be downloaded here.
