Windows Media Components for QuickTimeTelestream has had a Leopard compatible beta out for quite some time now but this is the first stable Leopard compatible release (v2.2) of the popular and very widely used suite of Windows Media Components for QuickTime. Flip4Mac is a set of Windows Media codecs that allow you to play WMA and WMV files on QuickTime Player on Mac OS X. After the abandonment of the sorely disappointing Windows Media Player application for Mac OS X, Microsoft decided to lend official support to Telestream’s brilliant little application.

You can download the free version from Microsoft’s official website (or check for updates in the ‘Flip4Mac WMV’ preference pane if you have the beta version already installed) which allows you to play the Windows media files using QuickTime Player, the Safari web browser and other QuickTime based applications. If you purchase a license to the pro version, you can also convert those Windows Media files to other QuickTime Player supported formats. If Windows Media is your thing, Flip4Mac is the way to go.

Flip4Mac also has three more paid products namely WMV Studio, WMV Studio Pro and WMV Studio Pro HD which allow you to do more advanced stuff such as “using fixed preset encoding profiles” and creating custom encoding profiles. I have no idea what all the high tech gibberish means but if it strikes your fancy, Telestream has a neat little comparison and prices of all the products arranged on one page for your viewing pleasure.

You still need Windows Media Player to play many online radio stations though - I can't get them to work through Flip4mac/Quicktime. True??

To Simon, I believe WMP is dead to the Mac user. Flip4Mac is it's successor. Many other radio stations play thru iTunes, but I've found a good number play thru Flip4Mac fine.
I think there is one more product that Flip4Mac has, which is not mentioned. And I've had some good experience with it so far. It's called Drive In. I actually like the idea of working with a DVD copying program that's on the "up and up", And, it produces complete imaged copies in the original resolution. The organization and ability to download artwork for each title, works well.  Lots less demand on my Powerbook battery, too, as well as a cooler running machine
