EyeTV 2.4 makes friends with the Apple TV

EyetvappletvMy Elgato EyeTV Hybrid is one of my favorite accessories for my MacBook. It lets me watch, schedule, edit, and export HDTV content (as well as regular digital and analog TV content) straight from my Mac. Today, though, I have one more reason love my EyeTV—and one more reason to buy an Apple TV.

An update to version 2.4 of the EyeTV software, which is included standard with any Elgato device, was released today. This version adds a feature of special significance to the software: an “Export to Apple TV” option. This option is very similar to the “Export to iPod” option, and adds a one-step button which will export any selected clip especially for the Apple TV. Other small features have been added too, a few of which are:

  • Support for program data from set-top boxes
  • Support for third-party infrared hardware
  • Spotlight searching of recorded programs in OS X
  • Multiple monitor support and options
  • More features in the Program Guide which make browsing and recording programs much easier and faster
  • Numerous bug fixes

My remaining question is what format EyeTV will export for the AppleTV. If I record 24 in HD and click the Export for Apple TV button, will it be exported in widescreen 720p, and if it is, will it play on the Apple TV? I guess the only way to really find out is to go out and buy a shiny new Apple TV. Oh yeah, and I’ll probably need one of those big HDTV things too.

does the eyetv plays videos not recorded using the device and if yes, which formats?

would those non recorded videos also be exported to the tv?

so many questions... :)

Not to shoot down your excuse for buying an Apple TV, but I don't think you need one to convert to Apple TV (or to determine the format of the output).

Now, if only EyeTV were smart enough not to record 24. I mean really, you watch 24, Kate watches Blood Ties? I know Heroes won't be on until Monday, but you don't have to resort to this. Give your EyeTV some time off.

@jayH, you can play any (I think) Quicktime movie with EyeTV. I use it for full screen playback. Whether you can covert other videos with it, I can't say (never upgraded to version 2).
