When it comes to add-ons for Apple Mail, Ecamm’s Dockstar is one of my favorite. It lets you create up to five “unread messages” badges on Mail’s dock icon which can be assigned to different folders and mailboxes. This way, you can differentiate, say, a new work message from a normal message.

DockStar already had great customization, with numerous shape, color and transparency adjustments, but version 2’s badges also have the ability to show junk or flagged messages instead of unread ones. This new release also adds sound notification for each badge, a widget and a screensaver, and support for nested folders.

Ecamm offers a 7-day demo, and you can snag the full version for a mere $8.

DockStar is a must for any power user of Mail.app. Couple it with some rules and a couple well placed Smart Folders and you've got a way to avoid reading email constantly (by prioritizing). Good stuff.
