Correo, it’s Camino for email

Main While Apple Mail is still my favorite mail client, Thunderbird is my first choice on Windows and as a backup on OS X. The program is great, complete with a nice interface, a vast database of extensions and themes, and great support for just about any mail protocol. But, even with an Apple Mail skin, it still lacks that shiny, integrated Cocoa feel that always makes Mozilla apps stand out.

Well, to fill in the gap, meet Correo. Dubbed as mix between Thunderbird and Camino (even though the project itself is not affiliated with Mozilla), the open-source application is still in pre-beta, only just coming out in its 0.2 release. But, for such an young application, Correo is still pretty full featured, complete with Cocoa, Mozilla’s signature Gecko engine, and a sleek, two or three column interface. And, the 0.2 release adds a ton more, including Keychain support, Address Book integration, and better list support for IMAP accounts.

But Correo is definitely still pre-beta. It didn’t even download the other folders on my IMAP server besides Inbox, and is very lightweight and lacks any kind of customization or preferences (in fact, the application doesn’t even have a preferences menu). And, like Camino, it lacks one of the best features of Mozilla applications — extensions and themes. But, Correo does have a lot of promise, and could turn out to truly be the Camino of the email world.
