While the Xbox 360 has functionality similar to what Apple offers with the Apple TV, Mac users are left in the cold without Connect360. Nullriver today released version 3.0 of the application, adding support for H.264 and MPEG4 video. Connect360 is a preference pane that allows iTunes, iPhoto, and movie content to be synced to an Xbox 360.
For a long time, it only supported Microsoft’s Windows Media format for video, but now it accepts movies with extensions such as .mov, .mp4, and .m4v (thanks to a recent update to the Xbox by Microsoft). As before, AAC and MP3 are among the supported audio formats. Version 3.0 also brings iTunes podcast syncing, and the application will update the Play Count and Last Played info of iTunes content if it’s played on the Xbox.
While Connect360’s main limitation remains the inability to send protected media from the iTunes store to the Xbox, this update brings Microsoft’s game console one step closer to the Apple TV. Connect360 has a free trial and costs $20.
