For anyone that regularly deals with any kind of code, BBEdit is a Swiss Army knife of sorts. This piece of code-writing and editing software gives one complete control over the creation and manipulation of any software or web development language. Thus, when Bare Bones Software today released version 9.0 of its acclaimed application, it came loaded with a plethora of updates.
One of the most important of BBEdit 9’s updates is the introduction of the new Projects feature. Projects take the existing concept of BBEdit’s File Groups and make it a full fledged view with an editing window, which will display the contents of any file in a Project list, which can include documents, folders, or custom groupings of documents called Collections. Another major feature of BBEdit 9 is Completion, which autocompletes typed text or code using either a delay in typing or a set keystroke. Plus, Completion can be turned on or off for each language you write in.
There are loads and loads more features in BBEdit 9, including modeless find/replace windows, a Scratchpad for quick and isolated text manipulation, and MobileMe integration (in the form of preferences and Application Support syncing), making this quite a worthwhile upgrade. For anyone who purchased BBEdit 8.5 to 8.7 on or after January 1, 2008, the version 9 upgrade is free, while all owners of BBEdit will have to pay $30. And of course, new users of BBedit can get the app for $125. But no matter how long, if ever, you’ve used BBEdit, or how serious a software developer you are, BBEdit 9 will be sure to catch your eye.
