Here’s my theory behind the adjustments to Daylight Savings Time here in the US: the government really wants to be able to say, “Your day, now with 10% more sunlight! Brought to you by the United States Government.” Ooh, look, we can control the sun. Great, very impressive. How about making my tax return understandable? Didn’t think so.
We reported a few weeks back that while the new Daylight Savings rules are implemented in Tiger as of 10.4.5, earlier versions of OS X had been left out in the cold. Not so anymore, as today Apple released version 1.0 of the Daylight Saving Time Update (now hitting Software Updates far and wide). Spell it out for us, Cupertino:
Apple is providing software updates for Mac OS X 10.3, 10.4 and later based on worldwide time zone information available as of January 8, 2007. To make sure that your clock maintains the proper time, simply install the updates that are shown for your computer in Software Update. And for all you non-US residents who are pointing and laughing, we recommend you not miss this line:
You should install these updates even if your computer is used in a time zone that is not affected.Phbbbt. Apple’s also dropped an update for Java that takes the new Daylight Saving Time rules into effect.
Phew. Y2K7 averted!

This daylight savings change is really stupid... If Canada doesn't follow, now Eastern time in Canada will be different than US Eastern time... Well done, US of A.
aaaaw look! my name!
i will screen cap that lol
oh, and you're welcome :)
You are NOT getting 10% more sunlight with DST. You are getting the exact same amount of daylight as before, you are just shifting the time of both sunrise and sunset.
Uh shadownight (dude, you're not a comic book character), time differences don't stay consistent within the US, some states don't even observe DST. You think we're that concerned with Canada and a one hour time difference (my God, it's like talking to Halifax)?
This change is intended to lower energy consumption by giving us more daylight at the end of the day (doesn't help the early risers, of course). Also, by delaying the end of daylight savings by one week, Halloween will always fall during DST--safer for the kids.
@Joel: See? Those pesky politicians, always bending the truth!
