It’s time once again for the ever-popular Software Update dance. Today must be multimedia day, as Apple’s both dropped new versions of iTunes and QuickTime (they go together like chocolate and, well, more chocolate). We wait, with bated breath, to see precisely what Apple’s got to offer us. How about iTunes 7.5?
iTunes 7.5 features the ability to activate iPhone wherever service is offered and support for Phase, a new interactive music game designed exclusively for iPod nano (third generation), iPod classic, and iPod (fifth generation). This release also includes bug fixes to improve stability and performance.Er…yay? We’ll give this one a “neither the most explicit nor the most vague entry we’ve seen coming out of Cupertino” award. I know zip about this “Phase” game, but it must be pretty darn awesome if it requires an iTunes upgrade, right? And as for the iPhone activation, it seems like 7.5 will be the version needed to activate iPhones when they’re rolled out in Europe, starting later this week.
Meanwhile, QuickTime 7.3 comes in four—count ‘em, four—different flavors: Panther, Tiger, Leopard, and Windows. The OS updates appear to be virtually identical, according to the update copy:
QuickTime 7.3 addresses critical security issues and delivers:Hey, great. Sounds super. I’ve download both updates, but I’ve only had a chance to install iTunes (pesky QuickTime requires a restart). They’re doesn’t seem to be anything earth-shatteringly new here, though.
- Support for iTunes 7.5
- Updated support for creating iPhone-compatible web content
- Updated JavaScript support in the QuickTime Web Plug-in
- Numerous bug fixes
iTunes now behaves like a true Universal app (when it's in the background, it looks like a background app).
I wish there was some details to the bug fixes. I don't have an iPhone and what I have works now, so I don't want to risk any unnecessary upgrades.
This seems like a good a time as any to point out that Leopard now requires that you log out while installing updates that require a restart. This should fix that pesky problem of bricking your system when using apps during an optimization. Happened to me once, not fun!
Looks like Phase is a guitar hero type game. Could be cool.
