Adobe’s in their Element with Photoshop

Photoshop Elements 6As we find ourselves drawn further and further inside the black hole that is Macworld Expo, we expect to find ourselves in a deluge of product announcements not dissimilar from the rains that have drowned the Bay Area in recent days. But all downpours start with just a few drops, hence yesterday’s announcement of Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.

It took a while for Adobe to roll out an Intel-compatible version of its Creative Suite, but with that now taken care of, they finally have time to go back and fill in some of the gaps in their lineup. But don’t be fooled: Photoshop Elements 6 is more than just a fancy-shmancy Universal Binary. The new Photomerge technology lets people combine facial expressions and body language from as many as 10 different photos (of, we presume, the same person, though imagine what this could do for celebrity mashups). Guided Edit helps fix common problems by just hitting a single button, while it explains what exactly the issue is. And there are now customizable layouts for photo books, greetings cards, and more.

You can pre-order the package starting today for just $89, or upgrade from a previous version for $69, but it won’t ship until the second quarter (shipping’s even free until March 24th). They will, however, be demoing the new version at Macworld, so we’ll try and take a look see.

Hallelujah. I'm getting a new Macbook in the spring and this is the one program I was worried about. I don't use it much now that I have Lightroom (shh... don't tell Apple) but I still need it on occasion. Glad to see they have finally caught up.
