A few exciting little updates from Apple

Posted by Scott Silverman | Tuesday, May 01, 2007 3:11 PM PT

Software UpdateMay 1st is a very special day in the world of Apple Updates. Why? Because Apple has released three different updates today! We’ve got ourselves a QuickTime update, an AirPort Extreme update, and a very special Security Update. Below are the details of each.

QuickTime 7.1.6 brings support for Final Cut Studio 2 (perhaps a sign that it will be shipping soon?) and both timecode and closed captioning. Additionally, it fixes numerous bugs and fixes a “critical” Java security issue.

AirPort Extreme Update 2007-003 is recommended for all Intel Macs and includes “compatibility updates for certain third-party access points configured to use WPA™ or WPA2™ security.”

Security Update 2007-004 v1.1 improves the security of several boring features, including, but not limited to: AirPort, Carbon Core, Installer, SMB, Video Conference, and WebDAV. For some odd reason or another, this update will not show up in my Software Update. It can, however, be downloaded from the above link.

Update: As one user brings up in the comments, Security Update 2007-004 v1.1 seems simply to be a revamped version of SU 2007-004. It does not provide any new security updates. Thus if you have already installed SU 2007-004 on your 10.4.9 machine, v1.1 will not appear in Software Update, and nor should you install it. If you have not installed SU 2007-004, however, you should install v1.1, and it should appear in Software Update.

System Requirements

* Mac OS X 10.4.9 (Intel)
* Mac OS X Server 10.4.9 (Universal)

Could that be why it's not showing up for you?

Good job Apple, I didn't think they will fix it this fast.

Security Update 2007-004 v1.1 is an updated version of Security Update 2007-004 for OS X 10.4 SERVER that fixes some things that the original Security Update broke. If you're using the regular consumer version of 10.4 then this update is not for you and won't show up in Software Update.

Great info over on MacInTouch (http://www.macintouch.com/)...

"Note:
Mac OS X v10.4.9 (client) and Mac OS X Server v10.3.9 systems that have installed Security Update 2007-004 do not require Security Update 2007-004 v1.1. If the security update has not yet been installed on these systems, then they should be updated using Security Update 2007-004 v1.1.

Since Mac OS X v10.4.9 (client) and Mac OS X Server v10.3.9 systems that have already installed Security Update 2007-004 are not affected, the Software Update utility will not display Security Update 2007-004 v1.1 for these systems."

Ah! A QuickTime update. Mandatory reboot time, just like running a Microsoft operating system.

Can anybody explain why upgrading a multimedia application on a Unix box forces a reboot??

It bugs me!
