You’re security conscious, so you turn on Apple’s built-in firewall. You’re cheap, so you use Skype to make phone calls. If you fit in these two groups, you got a rude awakening. Skype don’t work.
Like a lot of people in the Mac community, we’re excited that Mac OS X Leopard is now out in the wild. As you may have read, Skype runs into trouble when Leopard’s firewall is activated.
Skype is promising a fix in a few weeks. That’s really rough for people that use Skype as their primary phone service (they do exist). I’ll probably sound like a hater, but this is why I like to have a standalone device on my network handling my phone service.
Regardless of whether this is actually a Skype programming issue, Apple’s new firewall isn’t making many friends. The former version certainly wasn’t perfect, but the new implementation isn’t quite there.
Surely they can just disable the firewall when they want to use Skype? It's a bit of a pain but surely it's better than not being able to make calls?
Why would you turn the firewall on ? Did you enable windows filesharing or something like that ??
Servaas,
So you think your Mac can't be compromised because you don't use Windows file sharing? Really? You are that naive?
madboarder,
A lot of people use Skype while traveling. Do you really trust that connection to the WiFi hotspot?
I have had no problem using Skype with the Leopard firewall.
I don't have Leopard's firewall enabled, but I still had trouble using Skype on my Intel iMac. I couldn't hear the other party, even though they could hear me. I could hear system sounds and audio in other apps just fine.
