New MacBooks: clicking optional

Posted by Scott McNulty | Tuesday, November 04, 2008 9:35 AM PT

trackpadmacbook.jpgYou might recall that one of the things I don’t like about my new MacBook Pro is the glass trackpad. The clicks, when they work, are very loud. The loud clicking I can get used to (and I already have), but when I click I expect the MacBook Pro to…well…register the click. Judging by this discussion on Apple’s Support Web site it would seem I’m not the only MacBook user to notice this most bothersome issue.

One person decided to do something about the issue, rather than just complain about it. This blogger did what any normal Mac user would do when confounded by an Apple related hardware quirk: emailed Steve Jobs. Steve didn’t reply, but an Apple representative did call the blogger and let him know (off the record, one assumes, but hey all is fair in love and blogging) that Apple was looking into the problem. A fix isn’t forthcoming, but here’s hoping that it is just a simple firmware issue.

So, readers, do any of you have new MacBooks? How is the trackpad treating you? Let us know in the comments.

I bought one of unibody MBP on Saturday. The first thing I noticed was that my thumb is always where the button use to be. So the issue I have is that the new trackpad thinks I am doing one of the two finger gestures or doesn't do anything as in the cursor doesn't move at all. I am finding I have no where to put my thumb. At some point I'll get used to it, but it is annoying at the moment.

I ordered the new MBP on day1, and have had absolutely no problems with the trackpad. In fact, compared to my old MBP trackpad, which I avoided using if at all possible, I find myself opting to use the trackpad INSTEAD of my mouse many times even when it is sitting on my desk...

I'm finding the new trackpad a little frustrating. Perhaps, I'll get used to it? But for the time being, day two of new MacBook, it's still not registering every click reliably, and I find myself accidentally zooming text while browsing. Keep my thumb off the pad seems to help.

Just got my new Alum Mac Book yesterday. I've noticed a couple minor quirks with the touchpad as well. Unfortunately I've already got to take my MacBook back to the Apple store, the power button is sticking. Is anyone else having this problem.

I have a new MacBook, not the Pro model, and maybe the issue is only limited to the latter?

My glass trackpad's click is no louder than the one in my white MacBook. Further, the trackpad itself is so smooth and easy to use that I hate using the white one's now. Even if it wasn't so much cmoother, and bigger, I'd miss the new gestures.

In short, the old model's trackpad is primitive to me now.
