Fix networking in 10.5’s Finder…sorta

Posted by Dan Pourhadi | Wednesday, December 26, 2007 11:24 AM PT

getamacnetworking.jpgAll right: Yes, the new Finder is not nearly as sucky as before, and yes, for the most part, networking actually works, which is great considering the Finder’s past history with multi-computer communications. But improving on “sucky” doesn’t mean it’s “good”; it just means it’s a little better than sucky.

Which is great, sure…except when things don’t work. I still run into some networking difficulties — connecting to local or Back to My Mac machines, for example, or even trying to mount an AirDisk drive via Airport Extreme. Things just lock up: the “Disconnect” button breaks, and the little spinny sprocket thing spins and spins and spins…but nothing happens.

So what’s the fix? Kinda simple, actually: Option-click the Finder in the Dock, and relaunch it. All the network stuff is refreshed, and when you open a new Finder window, you’ll see all the available network drives — except this time, you should actually be able to access them.

It’s only a “sorta” fix because it’s not permanent: you’ll have to do this every time you have network problems. But hey, at least it works.

I'm sure it's very easy to implement some of the features, but they just refuse to do so.

I would so love for the open/save dialog boxes to act like real finder windows, so one could do renaming, moving around and such right from there. And it won't be any trouble for Apple to implement that feature.

As for networking, I finally don't have to worry about an unmounted network drive without Finder going SBOD on me...

Another sticky network issue is that 10.5 broke something that worked fine in 10.4: the ability to access SMB- and CFIL-shared volumes. A flurry of workarounds and the not-so-recent 10.5.1 update supposedly cured the problem for some users, but in our shop Leopard is still a no-go for SMB.

at least u could see the other computer in the network...

my boyfriend and i were trying to transfer his mom's songs and pictures to the new computer and could not find the old computer on the network. when we tried to do it from the old iBook running panther, ta-da, there it was. the brand new macbook...

too bad connecting from the iBook did not change the fact that there was still no iBook anywhere to be found in the leopard's finder...

we had to do the file transfer via iChat until i had the brilliant idea of just using an external HD lol now THAT was a blond moment hehe

I cannot get screen sharing in iChat to work. This a a grave disappointment as it was one of the features I was most looking forward to. Scouring Apple's web site has taken me in circles leading nowhere. Leopard is still a no-go as far as any serious work is concerned. I'll not leave Tiger until they get the bugs out or 10.5 - and Adobe gets their apps updated for Leopard compatibility. In the meantime, if anyone has any suggestions for troubleshooting screen sharing (in iChat, not the Finder), I would appreciate any help.
