SubRosaSoft has released the freeware software DasBoot that allows you to take the small OS X installation that resides on repair utility discs (such as SubRosaSoft’s own or Alsoft’s DiskWarrior) and put it on an iPod as well as add your own maintenance applications of choice.
This is a powerful, flexible tool that will aid in any maintenance you need to do, making you boot quicker as well as allow you the toolset you need. I personally maintain a partition on an external disk for this purpose, but keeping it on an iPod can be a lot more convenient (especially when on the go).
It’s certainly worth noting that the hard drive in iPods are not designed for booting a computer. They can’t withstand the stress for long periods of time. However, for occasional maintenance, it’s perfect.
I’m also sending some good karma their way because they went the free route when they could have charged.
