Ask and you shall receive… While that little sentence hasn’t helped bricked iPhone owners recently, new iMac users should be happy to know Apple is hard at work on fixing a pretty significant problem that may affect them. You might’ve seen reports around the net that OS X has been completely freezing up on some aluminum iMacs, requiring a force restart.
Our good friends at Macworld got word from Apple that it’s looking into the bug and will fix it as soon as possible:
“We are tracking down the root cause of this bug, and will issue a software update which corrects it as soon as we can — most likely later this month,” the company spokesperson said. “We apologize for the inconvenience.”That’s nice to hear. Sure, it doesn’t concern most of us, but amidst all these negative sentiments towards Cupertino in the last few weeks, this is at least a sign Apple still loves you. Have you been affected by this issue?
MacUser is your source for news, info, and opinion about Apple, the Mac, and the iPod. Our dedicated team of bloggers covers everything that is relevant to Mac users — and, okay, some stuff that’s not quite relevant, but is still a lot of fun.
I received my new 24" aluminum iMac with 2.8Ghz processor in early September and I have had a number of freezes and lockups, with no discernible pattern. Aside from a few uses of iMovie and iDVD, I have not run the system too hard (it's for personal use, I use an IBM Thinkpad for work). I was just getting ready to take it to the Apple store, but now will probably wait to see what happens after they release the expected update. Otherwise, very happy with the machine.
I've had my 24" aluminum IMac 2.4Ghz for about 2 months. I use it about 30 hours per week, light home use, and have had no problems at all. I love the thing.
I've twice had a similar problem with my 20" 2.0 GHz aluminum iMac. Both times, I was browsing the iTunes Store for video or audiobooks and my system hung completely. This seems to have been fixed by a firmware update or an iTunes update.
Is it just me, or has Apple gotten a ton of bad press on the Internet lately?
I've had the 24" 2.8 Ghz model since launch, and I work it pretty hard (3D games and h.264 encoding). No hiccups yet. Has a tiny Apple glitch been overblown AGAIN?
I believe that it might not be only the new Imac. Purchased a MacBook Pro 15' in the summer, and it does freeze at least once a day (the black screen forcing restart)
Somebody else with the same problem?
Been fortunate with my 20" aluminum 2.0 Ghz. Haven't had a problem; didn't know there was one until reading about it in several different places.
From what I've seen with other Apple problems, their people will get on it and issue the fix once they track it down themselves.
Bottom line: I'm lovin' mine!
Peace.

Off Topic. Remember when you blogged about wanting more comments. I noticed that the comments are coming in quite well. However, now, the posts have slowed down. Give us something to comment about. I'm not angry, I'm just saying...
Love MacUser!
Moe, both of your points are right on.
I too am really glad we've been getting more comments since Dan P's post. Keep 'em coming, we love hearing from you guys!
I also agree about the drop in posts last week, and apologize for it. Dan "the original" was unavailable to post, but he'll be back next week and we'll be back to normal. Not to worry :)
This is why I love this blog. Thanks for getting back to me TGVL. It's good to know that you guys know that your audience matters. Dan 1 (the original) is the man, but you are all pretty talented as well. The whole MacUser blog doesn't revolve around him (no disrespect Dan 1), but he has done a good job of getting talented bloggers to keep us full of wonderful Mac news.
I've had my 24" Imac for 10 months and have terrible freezing problems. I've had one hard drive replaced. Need another and have had to do several system erase and reinstalls. There are days when it freezes 10 or so times. I run Parallels and have had some issues running this program.
