MacBook So another Mac hardware problem has been acknowledged. If your shiny MacBook decides to turn off all on its own, you can call Apple up for service. To quote the mothership:

If your MacBook is shutting down intermittently, please contact AppleCare for service.

I say sudden, you say intermittent. Armed with Knowledge Base article in hand, storm your genius bar! Hopefully you’ll be able to get through this whole post before it shuts off again.

How common are these sudden/intermittent shutdowns? I was thinking of recommending a macbook to my brother.

If it's been acknowledged by Apple, you can bet that it's common enough to bear consideration. I personally know of one person who has experienced this problem: my girlfriend. She bought her Macbook on June 12th and it's currently being serviced by Apple. This being said, I don't feel that this should dissuade you from recommending the Macbook to your brother. This problem will be addressed, either via Apple service in a case by case basis or by the release of revision B of the Macbook line.

Lately my Macbook has been shutting down suddenly, and today took many tries before it would power on. I finally had to hold down the power key until I heard an odd "beep" and then it finally booted up. I immediately fired up Backup and the external harddrive as that hadn't been done in a while.

The biggest problem is that I am on an internship in France and though I will be home in 4 weeks (NH) for one week, I go back for another 3 months. In no way will Apple be able to service my machine in 1 week and it essential for me to have a laptop here.

My brother bought a Macbook in early August, and it has never had a sudden shutdown or any other kind of problem.

Not making a conclusion, just letting you know...
