It was just last Friday that we were talking about issues with the new AirPort Extreme base station and the Xbox 360, but it seems as though some users of the new base station are experiencing problems with Virtual Private Networks (VPN).
Though the spec page on the base station claims that it provides “VPN Passthrough (IPSec, PPTP, and L2TP)”, a thread on the Apple discussion boards has a number of users who have been experiencing issues connecting to their VPNs using a client by Nortel and the base station. Some users have reported success with Cisco’s VPN client.
For those of you who might be running into a problem, the solution for the moment is to set up your computer as the “Default Host.” A warning, though: this solution is far from ideal since it essentially exposes that computer as if you had plugged it directly into your cable/DSL modem. If, however, you need VPN access, follow these steps from user Stuart Edmondson:
In Airport Utility, double-click on the AEBS. In the popup window, click on Internet. Then click on NAT. Check “Enable default host” and set the IP address to what the AEBS has given to your mac.How about it? Any of our readers run into this problem? Does this solution work for you?
