Uh oh: looks like there’s some trouble going down with Apple’s latest QuickTime update, 7.4, and Adobe After Effects, versions 7 and 8. A number of users of both are experiencing problems rendering video in After Effects with QT 7.4 installed. Instead, they’re getting an error reading: “you do not have permissions to open this file (-54).” Apple’s discussion boards are aflame with indignation and outrage.
A number of potential culprits have been implicated, ranging from DRM issues with the new iTunes movie rental support in 7.4 to outdated Flip4Mac plug-ins, but there doesn’t seem to be an official fix at the moment beyond downgrading to an earlier version of QuickTime (you can grab 7.3.1 for Tiger or Leopard if you’re encountering the same difficulties.
Man, if this is indeed DRM-related, that’d potentially be two strikes for Apple and DRM just in the past couple days. Maybe music isn’t the only place we should be getting rid of DRM, hmm?

I was all set to rent a movie to watch on my MacPro so I downloaded the new iTunes software but stopped when I saw I also had to download QuickTime 7.4. It's a good thing I did because I use my MacPro to make my living on so I use FCP and After Effects. I won't be renting any movies until the issues with 7.4 are fixed. I wonder how many other people aren't renting movies?
