Wired How-To feeds your Mac’s need for speed

Wired How-ToIf there’s one thing of perpetual interest to computer users the world over, it’s how to speed up your computer. Computers have gotten faster and faster in the past twenty years, but they’re still somehow never fast enough. We’ve covered any number of suggestions before, including Derik’s infamous list of 52 things that won’t necessarily speed up your Mac.

Now Wired’s gotten in on the act, drawing up a collection of some things you can do to improve your performance over at their How-To Wiki. The list is pretty solid, hitting time-honored techniques such as tossing unused apps and language packs, cleaning up your Desktop, and the most tried-and-true method: upping your RAM and/or hard drive space.

They also point to a few things that don’t give speed improvements, like everybody’s favorite: repairing permissions. Most of the list is common sense for those who’ve been around the block a couple of times, but if you’re looking for a concise, clear explanation for the friends and family who constantly complain to you that your computer is too slow, this might be a handy site to send over.

I don't know why my friends and family would complain that my computer is too slow, but my answer would be a donation to a New Computer for David Fund. Similarly, if they complain to me that their computers are too slow, I would recommend they pony up the cash to deal with it (RAM upgrade or toss that 10 year old POS). This may be why no one complains to me :)
