Metadata for dummies

Metadata. For many it’s the greatest thing since sliced bread. Some people like tagging their files till the cows come home. Personally, I’ve never found it to be the most enticing way to keep my stuff in order. I rely on good old fashioned folders and file names. I’ve always found it inconvenient to be forced to think of the appropriate tags for a particular file.

For people like me who could never get the whole tagging thing to work out so well, The Apple Blog has a nice introduction to Using Metadata Effectively in OS X. While it really isn’t enough to take me to tagland, it was still a rather interesting read, especially his discussion of Quicksilver’s tag capabilities. It almost made me want to throw my folders to the wind. Almost.

Metadata is definitely a great concept for an operating system to utilize, and I reap the benefits of some of its under the radar implementations every time I use my Mac. Tagging though, is still a bridge I have yet to cross. Anybody reach the other side and have stories of fortune to draw me across?
