Sure, the Intel Mac minis have been the metaphorical toast of the town in the past few weeks, but let’s not forget their predecessors; the original, illustrious G4 Mac minis are hardly persona non grata.
If you’ve been looking to squeeze a little more life out of that PowerPC-based paperweight, well, wait no more. Over at Fastermini.com, they’ve posted instructions, lovingly illustrated, on how to overclock your Mac mini for better performance (warning: the instructions include soldering, so it’s not for the faint of heart). Overclocking has largely heretofore been a PC hobby, but if there’s one thing Mac fans have, it’s a can-do spirit (and, uh, a Mac).
I did have a floormate in college whose answer to everything was to overclock it, including to such complaints as “the microwave really isn’t fast enough.” And that was how I ended up fighting hordes of the undead for my undergraduate education.
