Mail.app keyboard navigation shortcuts

200610031652It seems like forever since we’ve heard from Tim over at Hawk Wings! I had almost forgotten how much I missed him. Well today is the day then, to bring a little bit of Tim back to MacUser.

Personally, one of my biggest pet-peeves when it comes to personal computing is having to constantly switch between the keyboard and mouse, mouse and keyboard. That’s why I often find my self using shortcuts like the Apple + Tab application switcher, Apple + W to close a window, and the tab key to switch between fields on an internet form.

In Mail.app, you can similarly switch between the search field, message list, the preview box, and the mailbox list using the tab key. Then use your up and down arrows to move up and down, or the left and right arrows to collapse a thread or expand a mailbox. Tim also mentions two small, but very useful, Mail.app plug-ins: Mail Act-on and Mail Type Select.

You can go into your GMail account settings and have it forward your GMail to your other addess you use in Mail. If you don't have a seperate address and wish to just use Mail to collect your GMail, then you need to turn on POP mail in your GMail account.

In GMail, go to Settings>Forwarding & POP and you can set up your forwarding there. There's also instructions for setting up POP with each Mail program.

Hope this helps.
