Mail.app IMAP tips

Mail.app Mess The secret is out. I try to help people with Mac problems all across the net. I tried to quietly help Jon on his Wizardishungry blog who was having a bunch of issues with Mail.app. I love Mail.app and I’m a little tired of people bashing it (particularly when the solution is to use Gmail), so if I can help make it as pleasant as it is for me for someone else, I’m happy. Here were his issues in fast form:

  1. Folders appeared underneath the Inbox instead of being broken out.
  2. Duplicate “Sent”, “Drafts”, etc. special function folders.
  3. Sent emails were being banished into the abyss.

The solutions, in short form are:

  1. Use the “IMAP Path Prefix” to break them out. In most cases where the above problem happens (extremely frequently I might add), the correct value is “INBOX”.
  2. Select the folder you want to use and use the “Use This Mailbox For” menu in the Mailbox menu. This is good if your webmail access or command line client insists upon using an alternately named folder. The weird naming even gets hidden from you.
  3. Related to number 1, until Mail.app knows to make folder underneath your Inbox, it tries to make them on the same level, fails to make the Sent folder, and has to dump the receipt.

Tim Gaden just had to out me as being helpful. Hopefully this advice will help a couple of you as well.

I don't understand people's gripes about Mail.app either. I'm a new Mac user and I just love it. There are so many nice little touches like the photo slideshows it can do, automatic signature switching when you switch From accounts, etc.
