Leopard’s Terminal condition isn’t fatal

ps -auxDespite the fact that I delve into the Terminal on a daily basis, I was unaware that there’d been some changes in the command-line in Leopard. Well, other than the fact that every time I tried to run the super-useful ps -aux, OS X kept telling me—with a distinctively sarcastic tone—”No user named ‘x’.” Well duh: That’d be a stupid name for a user, wouldn’t it, smarty pants?

Turns out that Apple’s making OS X compliant with the UNIX 03 specification (is this the first time that an official Apple tech document has linked to Wikipedia? Classy). The changes to ps are only one part of that, but I was relieved to find that you continue to be able to type ps aux and get what you might expect.

If you’re looking for a full rundown of what’s changed in Leopard, look no further than the Apple Developer Connection and this handy document. I know I was shocked—shocked—to find out that mkfifo’s -m switch “sets the created FIFO to the specified mode.” What is the world coming to?
