After much searching at many a Target, I finally managed to find a lapdesk yesterday. I’d been looking for one ever since I read Dan Frakes’s suggestion in his Mac Gems blog a while back that it was a cheap, easy way to prevent burning yourself with a hot MacBook or MacBook Pro. I picked one up for about $13. A tip: don’t bother with their online catalog; you should actually call the Target near you to see if they stock one. Other similar places may carry them as well.
I’ve only been using it a little while now, but I have to say that I’m quite impressed. The hard laminate surface is attractive, and mine comes with two elastics for keeping documents securely in place. In addition, there’s a little pocket on the right hand side for storing things; perfect for an iPod or Apple Remote. And though the pea green color of the beanbag underneath isn’t perhaps the most chic hue imaginable, I don’t have to look at it for the most part, because it’s under the desk (it’s less garish than the one Dan ended up with, fortunately).
I have noticed that if I walk away, and put the desk on my bed with the laptop still on it, that the beanbag underside does actually get a little bit warm. And the part of the desk under the MacBook is pretty hot if you lay your hand on it. But it’s far cooler than it would be against direct skin, or even pants, and come the winter months, I’m sure I’ll be glad of the extra warmth.
actually judging on the photos of your new buy, a cheap $9 wooden shoe rack from ikea. think that should do the trick =)

Linens N' Things is also a good place to find these (mine was $9.99USD plus tax), and they actually have them in non-garish canvas colors such as plain black.
Am I the only person in Macdom whose MacBook Pro stays at a comfortable temperature?
Guess I'm just lucky ;-)
I used a lapdesk with the bean bag bottom for several years. When the beans flattened out and I began looking for a replacement, I came across a better version. It uses thinsulate and venting to keep the lapdesk cool. It is a little pricer than the Target version.
