This guy has a good reason to hold a grudge against Apple.
So…Apple kindly screwed up the data transfer I paid for, removed and threw away my perfectly good hard drive, and gave me back a blank, still screwed up computer.
Long story shortened: His Mac was kernel panicking. He gave it to Apple for repair and paid the $50 to have his data saved. They dumped the hard drive without getting the data, and returned the computer in a still failing state.
Other people have already chided him for not backing up, but he’s justified his lack of a backup strategy by indicating how slow the DVD writer in it is. While that may be true, it’s better than nothing and really only takes a lot of time initially. An external hard drive and something like Super Duper works ten times better (even though you have to shell out some cash).
To be quite honest, I wouldn’t trust Apple to save my data. That’s no slight against Apple. I wouldn’t leave preservation of my data to any data recovery service. A data backup plan is a must for everyone, even your grandmother. As soon as I stop reading stories like this, I’ll stop hammering you over the head with it. I know some of you still haven’t heeded my advice.
MacUser is your source for news, info, and opinion about Apple, the Mac, and the iPod. Our dedicated team of bloggers covers everything that is relevant to Mac users — and, okay, some stuff that’s not quite relevant, but is still a lot of fun.
This guy doesn't have a good reason to hold a grudge against Apple. There's only one person responsible when you lose your data by not backing up: you. While his other points may be arguable (it would be a good policy to send a drive back, in case someone wants to escalate the rescue), Apple is not responsible for your data!
