Double click for a new tab in Safari 3.1

Safari One of the muscle memory things I’ve developed from using Firefox and Camino is double clicking in the tab bar to open a new tab. Opening new tabs is something I do constantly throughout my day, so it always frustrated me that doing the same had no effect in Safari.

Safari 3.1 changes that. It falls into line with other browsers, making the switch between browsers that much more transparent. With Safari 3’s tab manipulation features, this also means you can open a new window quick and easy. Double click for a new tab, then drag it out. Handy.

Now if only I could middle-click to close a tab like I could with TwiceTab

I use Command-T to create a new tab and the cursor is placed into the location bar so I can type a URL. Similarly, Command-N creates a new window with the cursor in the location bar.

Command-clicking on an item in the shortcuts bar will open it in a new tab with one click. Holding Command while selecting a bookmark from the menu will open it in a new tab. Command-Return in either the location bar or the Google search field will open the specified URL or search in a new tab.

If I double-click on the tab-bar then I have to either type Command-L or click on the location bar to type a URL. It doesn't seem useful since it always requires another action to actually load something into the tab.

Oh, it does go into the Location bar when I double click so that's okay. :)
